Authorities have identified a man who reportedly attacked and injured a Columbus police officer who was rendering aid in South Columbus Tuesday.
Officers with the Columbus Police Department arrested Keyata Jefferson, 39, of Columbus, and charged him with felony simple assault on a police officer and several misdemeanor charges Tuesday night.
The officer he allegedly attacked responded to a call about someone lying in a ditch bleeding on the 1400 block of Ninth Street South, according to a CPD press release. The officer found Jefferson “acting very irate yelling and flailing his arms around.” When the officer tried to find out what was wrong, Jefferson hit him.
Other officers at the scene attempted to arrest Jefferson, who resisted by hitting, kicking and spitting, the press release said. Officers even attempted to use a Taser, which had no effect. It took several officers to place him in custody.
The officer’s injuries appear to involve cuts, bruises and muscle injuries, the press release said. He was treated at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. Authorities did not identify the injured officer.
Jefferson was also treated for minor injuries and released. He is now in custody at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center. His bond has not been set.
