Two people are in the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center after deputies found marijuana in their home within easy reach of children.
Devin Thompson, 29, and Meshia Davis, 23, both of 100 West Jess Lyons Road, Lot 32, were both arrested late Saturday night and charged with multiple felonies, including child endangerment.
Capt. Archie Williams, commander of the narcotics division of the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office said the arrests happened after a deputy pulled Thompson over for a traffic violation near his home. Once Thompson pulled over, he fled on foot, Williams said. Within minutes deputies arrived at his house, where they found him, along with several bags of marijuana and a marijuana plant growing in the kitchen.
Some of the marijuana was on the floor in easy reach of the three children living in the home, all under the age of eight.
“Let’s just say you’re smoking (marijuana) in the house, well of course that’s child endangerment,” Williams said. “But also if you have stuff sitting somewhere where it can be considered in hands reach — if that child can walk around or crawl around and actually get their hands into those drugs — then that’s child endangerment (too).”
Department of Human Services was called to the home and later released the children into the custody of other relatives, Williams said. The children were all relatives of Davis.
Both Thompson and Davis were charged with felony child endangerment and manufacture of marijuana and their bonds set at $40,000 each. Thompson was also charged with several misdemeanor traffic violations and resisting arrest, the bonds for which make his total bond $42,480.
