Two area women are safe after a Sturgis man allegedly attacked them with a knife Monday.
The Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office has charged James Thomas Gregg, 41, of Simmons Road, with aggravated assault and possession of a paraphernalia after he allegedly stabbed a 40-year-old Mathiston woman in the arm.
Chief Deputy Chadd Garnett said deputies responded to a domestic event outside of Gregg’s home about 6 p.m. Monday. The Mathiston woman was treated and released from OCH Regional Medical Center that day, but first responders spent most of the night and morning searching for a 36-year-old Sturgis woman who fled the scene and hid from her attacker in the woods.
Gregg was arrested about 8 p.m., Garnett said, while authorities found the second victim near Big Creek Road about 6 a.m. today. She was also treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Garnett thanked the numerous agencies that assisted with the search, including city and county firefighters, Mississippi State University Police Department and the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
“We knew we had a woman in the pitch-black woods, scared to death. We did everything we could to find her as quickly as possible,” he said.
A bond has not yet been set for Gregg, and it is unknown when he’ll make his initial appearance in court.
OCSO’s investigation is ongoing, Garnett said, and additional charges could be filed.
