There will be a dedication to Mississippi author and Columbus native Tennessee Williams at Mississippi University for Women”s Fant Memorial Library today at 4 p.m.
“Tennessee Williams is one of America”s most famous and prolific playwrights and because he is a Columbus native, we feel it important to showcase him on the MUW campus,” said Brook Hanemann, professor of theatre at MUW.
There will be performances and reading selections from the Tennessee Williams canon in addition to speaking briefly about the importance of Williams” works.
A small section of the library will be dedicated to Williams” work. The goal of creating a reading room will also be discussed. The reading room is to hold Williams” collection, along with important works from other Mississippi writers.
One of the items on loan to the library includes a hand-crafted streetcar commissioned from Louisiana.
“We are starting small but our actions, we hope, will someday lead to the cultivation of a strong Williams” archive of a size and quality that will draw visitors, scholars and Williams” fans to Columbus from all over the globe. We endeavor to put Columbus on the map as a Williams destination in the way that New Orleans and Austin, to name a few, have already done,” said Hanemann.
