Friday’s icy weather led to an abundance of issues for travelers on area highways.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Master Sgt. Criss Turnipseed said troopers responded to 27 accidents in Troop G, which includes the Golden Triangle, as of midnight Friday.
Sleet and snow pushed through the Golden Triangle Friday morning, with more hitting the area later in the day. Turnipseed most of the accidents likely happened in Oktibbeha County when the winter weather first arrived and roads — especially bridges — began to freeze.
“Everything earlier in the day was pretty much around bridges,” Turnipseed said. “(Friday) night, we just had some good precipitation in Noxubee and Winston, so that was little more widespread than just bridges.”
Turnipseed said no serious injuries were reported in any accidents.
As cold temperatures linger in the area, Turnipseed said it’s important for drivers to be careful as they travel.
“Don’t be complacent,” he said. “Mind every mile. You might drive five miles and think everything is great, turn a corner and find some ice.
“Any time temperatures are this low and there’s been any kind of precipitation on the roadways, you have to be mindful on any road you go on,” he added.
