A 13-year-old boy in Noxubee County has been killed in what appears to be a gun accident.
Spenson Bennett, Jr., of Columbus, died at a friend’s home on Buggs Ferry Road in Noxubee County Thursday after a high-powered rifle fired, Noxubee County Coroner R.L. Calhoun said.
Bennett had just returned from hunting with a friend and an adult shortly after 6 p.m., Calhoun said. They apparently were passing around the firearm when it discharged accidentally. Bennett was shot in the upper abdomen and died at the scene, Calhoun said.
Bennett lived with his grandparents in Columbus but was staying with another grandparent in Noxubee County near the friend’s house, Calhoun said.
Bennett’s body will be taken to medical examiners at the State Crime Lab in Jackson who will most likely perform an autopsy later today.
