JACKSON — A Mississippi utility regulator wants to consider giving some active-duty members of the military breaks on their electrical and natural gas bills.
Public Service Commission Chairman Brandon Presley Tuesday proposed that the commission consider requiring lower bills for service members deployed outside the country on active duty.
The proposal would cover electrical utilities Entergy Mississippi, and Mississippi Power Co., plus natural gas utilities Atmos Energy Corp., CenterPoint Energy, Willmut Gas and Mississippi River Gas.
Commissioners voted 3-0 to start examining the issue. Presley, a Democrat representing the northern district, says he’d like to vote on a plan as early as March.
Presley says any changes wouldn’t apply to cooperatives or government-owned utilities.
The commission, at Presley’s behest, ordered utilities to delay deposits charged to domestic violence victims for new service.
