A Mississippi woman is going to prison after using an internet scam to try to profit off the burning death of a teenager.
Attorney General Jim Hood says 41-year-old Janet Lee Posey of Blue Springs pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of false pretense. Union County Circuit Judge John Gregory sentenced Posey to 10 years with three years suspended. She would serve up to seven years, if not paroled.
Posey was arrested in December 2014 after investigators said she created a Facebook page claiming to raise money for the family of 19-year-old Jessica Chambers, who was burned to death that month in the town of Courtland.
Authorities say Posey falsely claimed to be related to Chambers and intended to keep the money herself.
A man awaits trial in Chambers’ death.
