Columbus police have arrested a local man who allegedly stole a vehicle.
Edward Jones, 35, of 245 Marshall Dr., turned himself in to deputies from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday, city Public Information Officer Joe Dillon said. CPD is expected to charge Jones later today with two counts of felony taking of a motor vehicle, as well as burglary of a commercial building and possession of a controlled substance, according to a press release from the CPD.
Jones is being held in Lowndes County Adult Detention Center. His bond is set at $40,000.
CPD previously issued a press release asking the public for help locating Jones who has been accused of stealing two vehicles, including one whose owner spotted it in the parking lot of a salvage business on Gardner Boulevard on Aug. 2. When police arrived at the salvage business, Jones fled the scene.
CPD took Jones’ passenger, Tiffany Short, 27, of 530 Fellows Road, into custody and charged her with possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of a controlled substance.
Jones is also accused of stealing a truck from a business on Redi-Mix Road on Aug. 1. The truck was recovered four days later.
Bond set in shoplifting, fleeing case
In an unrelated case, bond has been set at $20,000 for a Columbus woman accused of shoplifting and then trying to run from law enforcement Wednesday.
Mamie Hawkins, 46, of 2323 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. S., was charged with felony failure to stop a motor vehicle when officer signals, according to a press release from the CPD. Martin allegedly stole merchandise from Reed’s Dept. Store on Highway 45 Wednesday and refused to pull over for officers who tried to stop her. She was taken into custody on Highway 82 East after she drove over spike strips Lowndes County deputies deployed to stop her.
Hawkins is being held in Lowndes County Detention Center.
