JACKSON — The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi is demanding the release of a police report on the death of a black man who was shot and killed by a white Tupelo police officer following a traffic stop.
The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports the ACLU chapter’s executive director, Jennifer Riley-Collins, called for “complete transparency in this matter” in a statement Thursday.
Earlier this week, a Lee County grand jury returned no criminal indictment against Officer Tyler Cook over the June 18 fatal shooting of 37-year-old Antwun “Ronnie” Shumpert.
Cook told authorities he shot Shumpert in self-defense during an altercation, but Shumpert’s family disputes the officer’s account.
Riley-Collins called for the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation to publicly release its report on the shooting.
