STARKVILLE — Six puppies from the Oktibbeha County Humane Society need temporary foster homes for the next two weeks before being transported to New England where their forever homes await them.

Foster families provide a much-needed service to OCHS as they provide a temporary home where the puppies can experience living in a home setting, socialize with other people and animals, and be observed for any medical or behavioral issues. Foster homes are needed from March 5th until the transport on March 20th. Foster families receive food and supplies to care for the animal(s) they take in. All animals are up-to-date on shots and spayed/neutered.

To apply to be a foster parent to one (or more!) of these dogs or puppies, please visit OCHS' website at http://www.msstate.edu/org/humane/, click “You can Help,” and download the foster home application. For more information about fostering animals for OCHS, please contact Michele Anderson at foster@ochsms.org or call the Starkville Animal Shelter at 662-338-9093.

Founded on the belief that the community has the responsibility to treat animals humanely, OCHS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is a member agency of the United Way of North Central Mississippi. The mission of OCHS is to promote domestic animal welfare and the organization seeks to fulfill this mission by providing humane education; promoting animal welfare legislation; advocating and facilitating pet sterilization; and rescuing, sheltering, and promoting adoption of abandoned animals.

wow, a whole page to attract foster parents, awesome. why don't they do this for all the CHILDREN in Mississippi that need foster parents? This country would be a lot better if people thought about people first and animals last. All the money they are spending on these mutts could be going to a child in need of food and clothing.

Liz,
For your information, there are lots of agencies and news coverage for children that need adoption and foster care. While many people want to help these children, laws and regulations are very prohibitive and that keeps many of us from taking these children into our homes. These "mutts" are God's creatures also. Don't fault people who want to help them. The laws are less prohibitive(naturally) for people to help animals, so I thank the individuals who open their hearts and homes to these animals.

They didn't do this for attract foster parents for children because this article isn't about foster children... It's about foster animals.

Liz, if you go and talk to some of the foster parents and look at the laws in Mississippi you would understand why people aren't lining up to be foster parents. They have had kids ripped out of there homes to go visit parents that are dead beats and have no intentions of cleaning up there act to get their kids back. Try having a kid from birth to 17 years old in your home raising them as your own and not being able to adopt them because they cant get a parental release. At 17 they come and want to be a parent and take that child from you. How is that fair???

Liz you don't have a heart..... I love animals and it breaks my heart to know there are pleople like you! Those poor puppies didn't ask to be born. You probally could shoot a little puppy and not think anything about it. Shame On YOU!!!

well I took in 8 kids and have had them for 3 years and we go to court this month to finalize the adoption. I have 14 children all together plus I have 2 dogs and 10 new puppies and 4 cats. All are healthy. I would be a foster mom for any animal in need, And any child in need. Just knowing I can make a difference in thier lives is enough for me.

Geez, say something about animals and the cat ladies come out with gun's blazing. Most of these post's are completely childish. Especially Cynthia Owen and Sarah. Seriously, get a life. Liz didn't say she hated animals, she said it doesn't make sense that dog's can get so much publicity when they are in need when there are so many humans that need help and get nothing. I am gonna go out on a limb and say that human's are far more important than any animal. It just amazes me how many nutjobs there are in this world. I pray that you all find the loving companionship of a human one day.

Why can't the news media cover foster care issues for animals and humans at the same time? Does every need for human foster care need to be addressed and solved before there can be any coverage of the need for foster care for animals?
My wife and I now care for twelve dogs and three cats, including several disabled puppies and a diabetic cat. One of our puppies was rescued by the police dept. from a crack house.
I am one of the most vocal critics of news media in the state of MS, so it is reassuring to me when I see the papers, radio and TV cover something that doesn't (and in this case, IMO, SHOULDN'T)create controversy just to sell ads.
Why can't the media cover foster care for animals with articles for people like us, who are too old for fostering children but have the means and interest in fostering animals?
BTW, we have three children and six grandchildren and I *am* a former institutional children's home resident.

Mr.Geiger- I'm delighted to see that you don't blame Mr. Imes ( or his newspaper) for all the cast-off, abandoned animals in the Golden Tri-Angle. SURELY you must think he is responsible for at least SOME of the problem.........maybe his business should pay for all the spaying and neutering.......just a thought.

I don't see how you missed the fact that I was defendng the publication of the article and others involving animal welfare, but it might be a communication problem. I haven't seen a reference to "the Golden Tri-Angle" since Udorn RTAFB Triple-Nickel days in Thailand.

Liz, I can tell you I prefer the company of animals a lot more than I prefer the company of people and with your attitude that just reinforces my opinion.

Not everyone wants to foster a child and is more comfortable with helping out innocent animals. You sound like someone who was in the foster care system and was a bad seed. Maybe if you showed a little compassion for all creatures you wouldn't be so hateful.
