Culin-Arts is moving back to West Point.
Valeda Carmichael, owner of the culinary supply store, announced late last week that she is bringing the business home. Carmichael moved the store to Oxford almost two years ago. She said while her stint there “fared well,” the college town’s growing pains sometimes created less than ideal environments for small businesses.
Her Oxford lease ends July 31. She hopes to open back up in downtown West Point shortly thereafter — hopefully in time for Prairie Arts Festival in early September, she said. Carmichael has long been a supporter of Golden Triangle artists, showcasing locally-crafted pottery, jewelry and original paintings in her store.
Culin-Arts will be located beside City Hall. Carmichael still owns the building.
She is excited about the move, as well as West Point’s future.
“I see West Point as being the quiet, quaint, artsy, retirement bedroom community in the Golden Triangle,” she said.
Also in West Point, the Southern Peach opened Saturday.
Blakely Hartwig is the owner of the boutique, which offers women’s clothing, jewelry and more. There is also a hair stylist at the boutique.
Southern Peach is located at 118 Commerce St. It is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday.
Les Originals, which has been in downtown Columbus for more than a decade, appears to be closing.
Signs appeared in the store’s windows recently, stating: “Store closing. Everything must go.”
The alterations and custom sewing spot, which also sells clothing, is at 107 Fifth St. S.
