The Miss. Horse Park will host the 47th Anniversary Central States Peruvian Paso Horse Show this weekend, and many more events are scheduled through early August.
The show horse event is a new addition to the Mississippi State University-affiliated park’s lineup, as it was previously held at the Jackson Equine Center. Admission to the event, scheduled from Friday through Sunday, is free.
Next weekend, the horse park welcomes the Mississippi 4-H Livestock Judging Contest. The 4-H youth program allows children to learn about agriculture and livestock production, and develop an appreciation an appreciation for the associated industries. The free event is presented by MSU’s Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences and the MSU Extension Service.
The first U.S. Harness Association-sanctioned harness race at the horse park will be held May 22, weather permitting, after a 10-year break. The event is produced by the Mississippi Trotting Association and will feature multiple races on the park’s resurfaced five-eighths-mile dirt track. Admission is $5.
The Mississippi National Barrel Horse Association State Championship Show kicks off June’s schedule. The event, scheduled June 9-12, will consist of state contestants who previously competed in preliminary shows across the state. Admission to the event is free.
MSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine will also host one section of its freshman team-building orientation at the horse park on June 23.
Wrapping up the summer series is Aug. 5’s Oktibbeha County Relay for Life. The event unties communities to celebrate those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and take action to finish the fight.
The horse park has hosted 11 events this year, including the Golden Triangle Kennel Club Dog Show and Rotary Rodeo. From January to March, 11 general horse-riding sessions were held free of charge to the public.
