A homegrown ice cream shop is opening in the Golden Triangle.
Churn & Spoon is slated to open next month in Starkville. The owner is Shane Reed, who has operated Strange Brew for more than a decade. His new venture will be located beside the popular coffeehouse at 605 Hwy. 12.
“First and foremost we wanted to produce a local product using as many locally sourced ingredients as possible,” Reed told The Dispatch this week about Churn & Spoon.
What he means is the cream will come from Neshoba County milk. The honey will be local. The pecans will come from Indianola. And so on.
For some time now, Reed and his wife have been making their own ice cream. Their creations will be featured at the new shop. So will ice cream cakes and ice cream sandwiches. And milkshakes and gourmet popsicles. Dairy-free ice cream will be on hand, too. Reed says what they will offer is “magnificent frozen treats.”
“We want to bring people’s childhood back and be as creative and as fun as possible,” he said. “It’s hard to have a bad day with a cone and ice cream in your hand.”
Churn & Spoon will open in late May, according to Reed.
The shop will employ about 15 people.
Moving to Columbus, work continues on the new Burger King coming to 18th Avenue North.
The city has issued a construction permit to the company and on Wednesday, city officials inspected the proposed 2,800-square-foot eatery’s foundation. Now, a slab can be poured.
Company officials say the fast food restaurant — it will be at 604 18th Ave. N. — will open in mid-June.
It will employ 35 to 40 people.
Lastly, the Dollar General in Steens will have a grand opening Saturday.
The first 50 adult shoppers will receive a $10 gift card. The first 200 shoppers will receive a Dollar General tote bag. The store is located at 6044 Hwy. 12 E.
Doors open at 8 a.m.
