A man is in stable condition after he was shot early Sunday morning in downtown Columbus, according to officials with the Columbus Police Department.
CPD officers responded to a call at 12:21 a.m. that said someone had been shot near The Princess Theater, according to a press release from Interim Chief Fred Shelton. Police found the victim, Alexander Crowell, 28, in the parking lot at the intersection of Third Avenue South and Fifth Street South. Crowell had a gunshot wound in the upper body.
Two officers at the scene performed CPR on Crowell, according to the press release.
Crowell was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle where he was later airlifted to a hospital in Jackson. He is in stable condition, according to the press release.
Police learned that three suspects had been in an altercation with Crowell over an ex-girlfriend before the shooting. One of the suspects, Dennis Hicks, 29, of 601 Alabama Street, later turned himself into the police. He has been charged with Failure to Appear. A $412 bond was set for Hicks.
A second suspect, Quinton Deangelo Harris, 24, of 300 Swedenburg in Columbus, turned himself in later Sunday. He was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a weapon and felony possession of a weapon. No bond has been set for Harris as of presstime.
Police have identified another suspect.
Witnesses at the scene told a Dispatch reporter the victim was shot after a fight between a large group of people began in the back of the Princess Theater and escalated as it moved to the front. The group was made to leave the business and the fight continued in the parking lot where Crowell was shot. Accounts varied about the size of the group, estimating anywhere from 50 to 100.
CPD stated on its Twitter account the altercation was over a woman.
Chris McCullough, who said he was sitting on the patio when the shots were fired, claimed he was watching the fight when he heard five shots.
“I leaned over the (gate of the) patio … and was just watching and about that time, … a guy pulled a gun out and it went to hell from there,” McCullough said.
He said he guessed the shots were fired from a small caliber gun.
No other injuries were reported in the shooting.
