Boardtown Grooming is open in Starkville.
Its first day was Nov. 3. They offer grooming for both dogs and cats. They also make homemade dog biscuits everyday. The shop, which includes a small boutique, occupies about 2,400 square feet at 113 C Martin Luther King Drive.
In the near future, Boardtown Grooming will begin offering Canidae brand pet food for dogs and cats. When that happens the store will be the only one in Mississippi offering the brand, which offers “natural and holistic pet foods,” according to its website.
The shop is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and on Saturdays by appointment. The telephone number is 662-617-8282.
The business employs three people.
In the spring, we told you the Hardee’s on Old Aberdeen Road — in front of Cowboy Maloney’s Electric City — was going to expand its dining room (about 20 more seats) and install a men’s and women’s restroom inside the restaurant. Well, construction is underway. The eatery will remain open throughout the process.
The restrooms are currently located on the south side of the building’s exterior.
Lastly, with Thanksgiving one week away, let’s talk turkey facts.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that 228 million turkeys will have been produced by the end of 2015.
The National Turkey Federation estimates that 46 million turkeys are eaten on Thanksgiving. The federation says most of those birds will be purchased frozen, which means they were produced around March, before the onset of this year’s avian influenza outbreak.
The worst case of avian flu in the history of the U.S. occurred in late April and May, when 48 million birds died from the disease. Of those, 7.5 million were turkeys. That’s about 3 percent of the turkey population.
The point is: If you are looking to buy a turkey, there is no shortage. And the one you find will have been frozen before the avian flu outbreak.
The USDA — using a survey of 20,591 retail supermarkets in this country — says the average price of frozen turkey hens this week is 90 cents per pound.
