A raceway driver died early Monday morning after crashing his car into a guardrail at the Starkville Raceway on Sunday night, according to Oktibbeha County Coroner Michael Hunt.
Sam McFarland, 68, was from Aberdeen.
He had taken a car out for a test drive about 9 p.m. Sunday and lost control near the end of the strip. WTVA, a Tupelo-based TV station, reported the car struck a generator at the track.
McFarland was transported to North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point. During the ride, he was awake and alert, Hunt said.
He died at 12:54 a.m. Monday morning of internal injuries, Hunt said.
McFarland was wearing his helmet and other safety gear when the crash happened, according to Hunt.
