CANTON — The U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed that a minor earthquake has shaken Madison County.
Multiple media outlets report that the USGS had initially said there was no activity in the area, but later confirmed that a 2.6-magnitude earthquake occurred Monday afternoon near Gluckstadt.
Reports of an earthquake along U.S. Route 51 began surfacing around 1:30 p.m., with media outlets reporting that they were receiving calls from people who experienced shaking.
It is the fourth earthquake in the area since May 2. The prior three were each between a magnitude of 3.0 and 3.2.
Earthquakes that register between 2.0 and 3.9 are considered minor. While they are often felt, there is rarely damage.
