COLUMBUS — Mississippi University for Women’s Office of Outreach and Innovation will offer 43 non-credit courses as part of its community Life Enrichment Program this fall.
New courses will include Best of “I Love Lucy,” Couples Massage, Grant Writing, Indoor and Outdoor Walking Clubs, Kindergarten Mathematics, Learn How to Sight-Sing, Plato’s Philosophy & The Examined Life, So You Want to be a Nonprofit Board Member?, Special Education 101 and Understanding Investments.
The first term, which starts today, will meet once a week for one to two hours. The second term begins Monday, Oct. 12. Courses are held during the day and early evening.
The Life Enrichment Program is introducing a new course titled Foster Grandparents. Participants will volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club of Columbus once a week for six weeks.
“The goal of this course is for participants to become role models and mentors to the young people at the Boys and Girls Club of Columbus,” said Janie Shields, Life Enrichment Program coordinator. She added, “We thought that this would be a great way that the LEP and participants could give back to our community.”
Courses in the Life Enrichment Program are taught by volunteers from the community who are experts in their field. The fee for each term is $35, which allows participants to take up to five courses each term. Class sizes are limited by the space available.
Special events this fall include W Planning with the President, a behind the scenes look into the university’s strategic planning process and a walking tour, Wine Tasting taught by Daniel Harrell and Make Scents, a candle-making class at Grassroots Natural Candle Company.
“The continued support of The W’s faculty, staff and administration, the LEP Advisory Board and the amazing volunteer instructors, are the reasons this program has been so successful,” said Shields.
She added, “The community support has been overwhelming. Everyone who participates in these courses enjoy learning and are eager to see what the next LEP term has to offer.”
