Columbus city councilmen will consider an all-way stop that one councilman hopes will resolve a safety issue near Propst Park.
Kevin Stafford of engineering firm Neel-Schaffer will present a proposal to the council to install a four-way stop at the intersection of Fifth Avenue North and 27th Street. Stafford said Monday the intersection is currently a 2-way stop.
“The issue is on the southwest quadrant there’s a tree,” Stafford said. “When people pull up on 27th, they can’t see the traffic on 5th. The traffic on 5th currently doesn’t have to stop.
“We’ve got two choices,” he added. “We can either remove the tree that’s in somebody’s yard that they probably don’t want to give up. The other choice is to put up a stop sign and stop all traffic. That’s our recommendation.”
Ward 4 Councilman Marty Turner requested the change after hearing safety concerns from residents. Turner said he received complaints from three residents about the intersection.
“They said people would leave from the park speeding down the street,” Turner said. “A lot of children play in that area and they need to slow it down. One gentlemen said he saw someone hit and dragged — it’s time to make the neighborhood safer.”
Councilmen will meet at 5 p.m. in the Municipal Complex on Main Street.
