Golden Triangle circuit clerks’ offices will remain open until noon Saturday to accommodate absentee voters for Tuesday’s special U.S. House of Representatives election.
Officials in Lowndes and Clay counties said absentee voting has picked up steam this week, as more voters are casting their ballots each day in the 13-person race.
“We’ve had a steady stream today and will hopefully have more before Saturday’s noon cutoff,” said Lowndes County Circuit Clerk Haley Salazar. “We want to remind everyone that noon is it — that’s the deadline — and to bring a photo ID along when they come to vote.”
While in-person absentee voting ends Tuesday, mailed ballots are due Monday.
Tuesday’s election will attempt to fill former U.S. Rep. Alan Nunnelee’s 1st Congressional District seat. The congressman died February. A runoff, if necessary, will be held June 2.
While about 53,000 eligible voters in Lowndes and Clay counties can participate in the election, only approximately 2,100 Oktibbeha County voters reside within the district.
All residents of the Maben, Bell Schoolhouse and Sturgis/North Bradley precincts live within the 1st Congressional District, but two other precincts — Center Grove/North Adaton and Craig Springs/South Bradley — are split between districts.
Oktibbeha County residents in the Center Grove/North Adaton precinct who live on the following roads and addresses can vote: A.W. Williams Drive 1-1702; Blasingame Road (odd) 11207-12059; Center Grove Road 1-674; County Lake Road 2155-5898; Douglastown Road 1-3536; Four County Road 1-330; Harpole Road 1-876 and (even) 878-2164; Harrell Road 1-4604; Hog Pen Road 799-946; Jones Drive 1-398; Maben-Bell Schoolhouse Road 2935-3192 and 3599-8402; Highway 389 (odd) 10183-12059; Poe Road 1-360; Polly Bell Road 1-3954; Sandy Lane (odd) 1-101; Sandy Lane (even) 2-102; Shuffield Road 1-3160; Highway 82 (odd) 3357-7609; Highway 82 7611-7900; and Wooten Road 1-352.
Residents in the Craig Springs/South Bradley precinct who live on the following roads and addresses are also eligible voters: Angel Road 1-186; Flippo Road 1-60; Jody Young Road 149-2364; John Starr Road 1-606; Sanders Road 1-86; Silver Ridge Road 773-5366; Sylvester Road 1-184.
Tuesday’s election in Oktibbeha County will also utilize paper ballots as a cost-saving measure.
