The Caledonia Board of Aldermen recognized the town’s volunteer fire department Tuesday night for receiving a class promotion from the state.
Mississippi has upgraded the town’s department from a class eight rating to a class seven rating. It is rare for a volunteer department to be rated this highly, according to Mayor Bill Lawrence.
Lawrence and the Board of Alderman unanimously resolved to recognize the department’s accomplishment during Tuesday night’s board of aldermen meeting.
In other matters, the board approved the purchase of a $21,382 V-8 truck for the water department. The department’s two work trucks both have more than 100,000 miles on them, and one has a troubled transmission, according to water department director Barrett Baggett.
Caledonia youth baseball and softball is right around the corner, and Parks Director Lisa Mims is expecting a large turnout this year. There are already more than 380 players signed up to play on 34 teams led by more than 75 volunteer coaches. The town will host 188 games on five fields in six weeks, Mims said.
The board approved the budget for baseball and softball, placing a preliminary cap at $28,000.
