A fire destroyed a Columbus home on Saturday night.
Columbus Fire Chief Martin Andrews said his department responded to a call around 5:35 p.m. regarding a fire in the 700 block of Moores Creek Road. Andrews, speaking at the scene, told The Dispatch that the home belonged to CFD Capt. Michael Scott Swain.
“This is devastating to be responding to a fire at your own house,” Andrews said.
The fire chief said it was unclear if anyone had been inside the home when the fire began, but no injuries had been reported.
Four fire trucks and a reserve water tanker initially responded to the fire. At least one additional 4,000-gallon tanker responded to the scene to help fight the blaze, which crackled and popped loudly.
The home, which appeared to be a two-story structure, was completely engulfed in flames at 6 p.m. Saturday. Smoke was visible from downtown Columbus as fire fighters worked to extinguish the flames.
The cause of the fire was unknown Saturday night.
