GREENWOOD — A Greenwood doctor who was the alleged instigator of a failed plot to kill a local attorney has been committed to state hospital to undergo treatment for mental illness.
The Greenwood Commonwealth reports Judge Hollis McGehee issued the order Tuesday for Dr. Arnold Smith after hearing testimony from four different mental health experts during a series of civil commitment hearings.
In October, Smith was found mentally unfit for trial.
Prosecutors say Smith’s plot ended April 28, 2012, with the death of gunman Keaira Byrd and the serious wounding Derrick Lacy.
Byrd allegedly was hired to kill attorney Lee Abraham, who represented Smith’s ex-wife in their divorce years ago. Abraham was not injured.
Lacy and Cordarious Robinson, who is charged with conspiracy in the case, are awaiting trial.
