Columbus dog owners will soon have a new option for their fluffy companions.
A dog park will be opening at the Columbus Soccer Complex within the next month, according to Roger Short, executive director with the Columbus-Lowndes Recreation Authority. The project has been under construction for the past month and should be completed by the beginning of December, Short said.
CLRA partnered with the Columbus Convention and Visitor’s Bureau to construct the approximately $32,000 project. The organizations will split the bill, according to Short.
Short said he and CVB director Nancy Carpenter decided to construct the park to give downtown residents a dog park within walking distance.
“They really don’t have any place other to take them other than get in their car and drive them,” he said.
Located on the back side of the complex off of Seventh Street, the dog park is across from the concession stand near the Weyerhaeuser fields. The new park will be similar to the existing dog park at Propst Park, Short said, with fencing separating the areas for big dogs and little dogs. The fencing has been installed, as well as a sidewalk.
Amenities will be installed in the coming weeks, including dog water fountains on each side, jumping rings, benches and waste stations. The Columbus Light and Water Department is donating non-working fire hydrants to give the park a playful feel, Short said.
The dog park at Propst Park will remain open.
