As children prepare to go trick or treating tonight, local law enforcement is offering tips to make Halloween a safe and fun holiday.
In a press release issued by the Starkville Police Department, the agency encourages parents to make their trick or treating route before they leave the house and accompany their children tonight as they go door to door.
SPD and the Columbus Police Department offered additional safety tips as well, such as wearing light or reflective clothing. SPD also suggested taping reflective tape to trick or treating bags. Carrying a flashlight or glow stick will also help make you visible to passing cars, both agencies said. Once you’re going door to door, only go up to well lit houses and take the candy at the door. Do not go inside a stranger’s house. The department also warned of approaching animals or vehicles you don’t know. CPD suggested children and adults wear comfotable shoes and double knot shoelaces to avoid tripping.
Once back at home, law enforcement recommended checking the candy before letting children eat it.
The Starkville Board of Aldermen set trick or treating hours from 5:30 to 8 p.m. this evening. The City of Columbus does not have set hours but law enforcement will be at Leigh Mall passing out candy from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Both agencies will have additional officers out tonight patrolling neighborhoods and asked that if you see suspicious activity, call 911.
