Wednesday, Lee Middle School will host a Veterans Day program to honor all past and present military veterans.
All veterans are invited to attend the event, Wednesday at 9 a.m. Those wishing to attend the program are asked to RSVP with the school.
“Our veterans have sacrificed so much for our country, hosting this event is the least we can do to thank them for their service,” said Lee Middle School Principal Cindy Wamble.
This is the second year Lee has hosted its Veterans Day program. This year’s ceremony will feature keynote speaker Maj. John P. “Milton” Lindell.
Lindell is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, and is a veteran of the war in Afghanistan. A former pilot instructor at Columbus Air Force Base, Lindell currently is the wing chief of flight safety for the 14th Flying Training Wing.
“I’m excited to hear what his message to the children will be,” said LMS math teacher and fellow Air Force veteran Debbie Lowe.
Though Veterans Day is often associated with honoring veterans of past wars, at least one veteran is hoping the school’s ceremony will remind students to think about those still serving abroad.
“With so much going on in the world today, it’s easy for us to forget that our country is still fighting two wars,” said eighth-grade guidance counselor and Air Force veteran Pat Gavin. “That’s why we need events like this. To remember all those who are still fighting for this country.”
