A New Hope High School teacher has resigned after a student allegedly found alcohol in the teacher’s bag at school last week.
Michelle Cox, a veteran Spanish teacher at the school, resigned Thursday, according to principal Matt Smith.
The Lowndes County School Board discussed the matter with Smith in executive session during Friday’s board meeting. Cox was not present. She could not be reached for comment.
The resignation comes after a student found what appeared to be alcohol in the teacher’s bag on Wednesday. Cox was given a Breathalyzer test and driven home, Smith said.
Cox was not arrested, according to Smith.
Smith confirmed Cox was not at school Thursday. The school resource officer, a deputy with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department, reportedly performed the Breathalyzer test but Chief Deputy Marc Miley would not comment on the incident.
Miley said an incident report was not filed and directed questions on the matter to the school district.
Superintendent Lynn Wright could not be reached for comment.
