JACKSON — Winter will sweep into Mississippi today on strong north winds, with a hard freeze predicted for all but the state’s coastal counties.
National Weather Service forecasters say an Arctic cold front will push southward over the course of the day, producing wind gusts as strong as 40 mph in some areas.
Temperatures are expected to fall into the upper 20s before dawn Wednesday and Thursday, cold enough to kill outdoor plants. It won’t be quite that cold on the Gulf Coast, but there could still be frost or a light freeze.
Winds are expected to settle down Wednesday and temperatures will begin warming again Thursday.
