A contract worker died from injuries sustained in an accident at Columbus Air Force Base Wednesday afternoon.
Dustin Meyers, 24, of Columbus, was working as an employee for RC Construction doing concrete work on the runway when the accident occurred just after 2 p.m. Meyers and his co-workers were cleaning a concrete finishing machine when his safety vest caught on the equipment and he was pulled into the machine, where he was crushed to death.
He was transported from the scene via ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. He died at 5:09 p.m. Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant said the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the body.
Merchant said a helicopter was on the ground preparing to fly Meyers to Jackson but he died before he could be transported.
The accident is under investigation.
An active member of Beersheba Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Meyers leaves behind his wife, Wanda, and a four-month-old son, Ian.
The Meyers’ are Columbus natives and had recently moved back to the area from Georgia to be closer to relatives.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, May 18 at 2 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home Chapel in Starkville.
A trust fund has been established for his son at Regions Bank. Donations may be made to James Ian Meyers, Regions Bank, c/o Matt Brown, PO Box 231, Columbus, MS 39703.
