Columbus Ward 5 Councilman Kabir Karriem has been selected to participate in a new leadership development initiative hosted by U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson.
“I am extremely excited and honored to be chosen to participate in this program,” Karriem said. “I am looking forward to bringing back knowledge that will help our community.”
This institute is the brainchild of Thompson, who is committed to helping homegrown Mississippi leaders from the African American community create a vision for a new Mississippi that is accomplished by a unified group of leaders from throughout the state. Karriem said he was selected because of his reputation as a leader in his community.
The First Leadership Institute will begin on Thursday, Aug. 9 and conclude on Friday, Aug. 10, in Tunica. The institute will include seminars on topics such as effective leadership, understanding how local/state/federal government works, becoming a change agent in the community and building successful collaborations. Participants will meet once a month for two days, over a nine-month period. Attendance in each of the monthly meetings is mandatory.
