Back-to-school shoppers throughout the state will get a break this weekend, thanks to a Mississippi law that excludes many purchases from state sales tax.
The tax-free weekend begins today and runs through Saturday evening and many stores that cater to back-to-school shoppers have extended their hours.
The tax-free law does exclude many items, however. Shoppers can avoid the sales tax on clothing and shoes and other items under $100, but accessories such as purses, jewelry and backpacks are excluded.
This will be the third year the tax-free weekend has been in effect.
