With a large crowd expected at Saturday evening’s performance of the acclaimed American Wind Symphony Orchestra, organizers are urging attendees to make use of available shuttles for the free event.
“The best parking is going to be in Kmart’s parking lot,” said Agnes Zaiontz of the Tenn-Tom Tourism Association, one of the entities responsible for bringing the floating orchestra to the Golden Triangle. “We’re really encouraging them to do the shuttle, because it’s going to be terrible (parking for the event) and there’s only like 650 parking places out there.”
Free shuttles will run from the parking lot at Kmart, located at 2308 Highway 45 N., to the concert, held at the John C. Stennis Lock and Dam, beginning at 5 p.m. through the end of the event.
The concert will be held at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a fireworks show.
“Parking lots at the Lock and Dam will probably be full in the first hour after the gate opens,” Zaiontz said, noting good seats on the East Bank of the Lock and Dam also will go quickly. “I highly advise (people) to get there as soon as possible.”
Concert goers are welcome to bring lawn chairs to use during the event, but pets are not allowed.
About six or seven vendors will be on site, selling beverages.
“Most people know to bring sunscreen and bug spray,” Zaiontz added, noting personnel from the American Red Cross, Columbus Fire Department, Columbus Police Department and Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office will be on hand, in case of emergencies.
Volunteers also are needed for the event to help with drink sales, parking cars and to drive golf carts to transport attendees requiring assistance, especially those who are handicapped, from the parking lot to where they will sit for the concert.
