The Columbus Police Department is searching for a suspect in an alleged pistol whipping (aggravated assault) and shots fired case.
According to scanner traffic, officers received a call at around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in regards to some shots fired at 421 Woolbright St. The shooting suspect was described as a “young black male wearing khaki pants and no shirt.”
An unidentified officer said “Jeremy Billups is our shooter” over the scanner. The officer also asked for an ambulance and a fire truck to assist with the call.
A “20-year old black male” had been pistol whipped with a revolver according to the scanner traffic. The fire truck was called because smoke was pouring from a car at the scene.
Upon arrival, the person who was identified as “Billups” on the scanner transmission and two other unknown black males fled the scene. The suspects allegedly ran to 412 East Gaywood, which Billups has listed as address on a previous arrest charge. The suspects have not been apprehended by the police and are still at large.
The aggravated assault victim was taken by ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital Golden Triangle. His condition is not known at this time.
Billups, 17, was arrested with five other young men in connection with the Sept. 2011 armed robbery/burglary of a dwelling of Karen Winter. He was charged with armed robbery and burglary. He was scheduled to appear in Lowndes County Circuit Court in May but his trial was continued until August. Billups testified in the trial of Demonta Gardner, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison on a burglary conviction.
CPD Public Information Officer Glenda Buckhalter could not confirm Billups’ alleged involvement as the “suspect in the incident is a juvenile.” Buckhalter said no arrests have been made in the case.
