Slim Smith has been named managing editor of The Commercial Dispatch.
After a 30-year absence, Smith returned to the newspaper May 1, initially to cover Starkville and surrounding communities at the Dispatch’s Starkville bureau.
In 1982, he began his journalism career as a sports reporter at The Commercial Dispatch.
A Tupelo native and graduate of Mississippi State University, Smith also previously worked as sports editor at the Biloxi Sun Herald, then in northern California and at The San Francisco Examiner in San Francisco, Calif. He left San Francisco in 1998 to become sports editor at the East Valley Tribune in suburban Phoenix, where he stayed until 2007, the last two years as the paper’s metro columnist.
“We are glad to have Slim in charge of our newsroom,” said Peter Imes, Dispatch operations manager. “He brings a wealth of experience and has roots in this area.”
As managing editor, Smith is responsible for guiding news and sports coverage by working with editors and reporters.
Smith can be reached at 662-328-2471 or via email at [email protected].
