Sports may return to Mississippi University for Women, President Dr. Jim Borsig announced Thursday to a crowd of former coaches, players and supporters gathered in the Emma Ody Pohl gymnasium.
Borsig plans to establish a committee of faculty, staff, alumni and community leaders, by June, to discuss the issue and gauge interest in returning athletics to The W. By fall, he likely will have a definitive answer on whether sports will return, he said.
If the response to the idea is positive, Borsig will name a new committee to examine the academic and financial ramifications of an MUW sports program, with an answer from the committee to be expected before the school’s next homecoming celebration is held.
Borsig began thinking about reinstating athletics, during campus visits last fall, before he was named president of the university. Campus sports were discontinued in November 2002.
“I believe, done right, it adds to the overall intercollegiate experience, strengthens academics and is good for the entire student body,” he said Thursday.
