A Columbus Police Department officer has been placed on administrative, following a Sunday morning shooting.
Around midnight April 9, officers were investigating a burglary at 607 21st Ave. N., when they were notified to watch for a suspicious vehicle, said CPD Public Information Officer Glenda Buckhalter.
“They were told to be on the lookout for a green Honda Accord,” Buckhalter said. “They spotted the car on 14th Avenue and it turned on to the 1700 block of Wheat Street. The car stopped midway down
Wheat Street and the driver and passenger got out of the car. The officer ordered the men to get back in the car. The passenger fled on foot. Officers fired shots at the driver for failure to comply. A gun was found in the vehicle.”
Jequanta Harris, 22, was taken to be Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle and was airlifted to University Medical Center in Jackson. Harris was listed in stable condition Tuesday morning.
Police Chief Selvain McQueen would not release the names of the officers involved with the shooting. He said the officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay, pending investigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
