A 6-year-old child was airlifted from Columbus to Jackson after receiving injuries in a two-car collision on Highway 82 Wednesday afternoon.
At about 1:30 p.m., the last accident victim was being loaded into an ambulance on a stretcher.
The wreck sent five people from one of the vehicles to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle.
Mississippi Highway Patrol trooper Brian Mobley said Wednesday evening the 6-year-old was airlifted from Baptist Memorial to a hospital in Jackson. He did not know which hospital the child was transported to or the severity of the injuries.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the Highway 82 westbound lane just before the Macon/Meridian Highway 45 South exit at around 1:15 p.m. Columbus Fire and Rescue, the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office and Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to the scene.
Mobley classified the injuries of the other four crash victims as moderate and not life-threatening. He did not know the gender of the child nor additional details about the others involved in the wreck.
All five people transported to the hospital were traveling in a blue Honda Accord. The driver of the other vehicle, a black Dodge Infinity, left the scene with another person in a private vehicle.
One responder on scene said one vehicle was in the left lane and the other in the right lane before the collision occurred.
Mobley said one car struck the other and both ran off the road.
The Accord came down the embankment, rolled over at least once and stopped after hitting a tree. The Infinity stopped in a creek running along Highway 82 and came to a stop — front-end up — in the creek, so potential damage to the rear of the car was not visible.
The Honda had heavy damage; one passenger door was crushed, as was the top of the car above the back seats; the front windshield was busted, and the hood was heavily dented.
