ABERDEEN — The city of Aberdeen is removing a bumpy railroad crossing in the downtown area.
Mayor Jim Ballard tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal that the work is part of the city’s efforts to improve its appearance.
Ballard says it’s likely been more than 20 years since a train crossed Commerce Street at the tracks. The river bridge north of the location has been out of service since the construction of the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway changed railroad traffic through the area.
Kansas City Southern is footing the bill for the track removal. The state will repave the road after the tracks are removed.
A new stop post will be moved farther south.
Ballard says the work will be finished by the end of the year.
