STARKVILLE — The retail growth of west Starkville will continue with Tractor Supply Co., which will open a new location in mid-to-late January.
Tractor Supply announced its expansion Tuesday of a 19,097 square-foot store that”ll be located in the vacant five-acre lot south of Waffle House on Greta Lane. The location is across from Walmart on Highway 12.
Tractor Supply owns and operates more than 1,043 stores in 44 states, supplying daily farm and ranch maintenance supplies to a targeted customer base. Tractor Supply Media Relations Director Rob Hoskins said Starkville”s large population of part-time and hobby farmers and horse owners made it an attractive area to open a store. Mississippi State University”s agricultural sciences and veterinary science programs will also benefit from Tractor Supply”s arrival.
“As a growth-minded company, Tractor Supply Company is always looking for potential new store locations that are a good fit as far as the target market is concerned,” Hoskins said. “The Tractor Supply product category expertise includes lawn and garden, and animal care products that service the needs of these customers.”
Most of Tractor Supply”s stores are located in rural areas or in a town considered a retail hub for neighboring counties.
The Highway 25 bypass connects customers from Winona, Ackerman and Louisville to west Starkville, which has spawned retail growth from the intersection of Highway 12 and Stark Road toward Highway 25.
“Our trade area is large and there”s a lot of traffic in that spot,” said Century 21 Realtor Spencer Bailey said, who brokered the deal. “For that area, there”s not much left to develop out there unless you go to the other side of the bypass.
“This is big for Starkville, too, which will benefit from ad valorem tax and sales tax. We”re fortunate to have (Tractor Supply).”
Hoskins said Tractor Supply stores typically supply between 12-17 full- and part-time employees.
Construction began on a Tractor Supply Co. in Columbus, on Highway 45 North on Aug. 8; it also should be completed by January 2012.
