Work continues on the North Steel Development, near the Golden Triangle Regional Airport.
The project, which will support New Process Steel and Mississippi Steel Processing, includes adding rail, water and sewer service, as well as an airport access road. New Process and Mississippi Steel Processing further process steel turned out at the Severstal steel mill. Both plants will further process steel turned out at the Severstal steel mill. The plants are located on the Severstal campus.
This month, the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors approved the following invoices for the project:
- $153,927 to Eutaw Construction for a rail spur;
- $23,364 to Calvert-Spradling Engineering;
- $182,197 to Ellis Construction for an access road;
- $84,777 to Cornerstone Underground for water and sewer.
Another project ongoing at Lowndes County” industrial park is at Stark Aerospace.
Tuesday, the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors agreed to modify the budget for the project to allot for engineering.
“It doesn”t require anymore funds. We”ve already got the money,” said George Crawford, analyst for the Golden Triangle Planning and development District.
The county acquired more than $2 million in grant funds for the Stark project, which included security, fencing, water and sewer lines, as well as an access road.
Bids for the project came in under estimates, and Stark decided to conduct a drainage project with the remaining near $29,000.
“I think they”ve got a good project. It” a drainage project that will allow … them to encircle their fences (on off-road vehicles) to check out there for security,” Crawford said.
The drainage project includes modifying ditches, adding a culvert along the fencing and extending pipe for erosion control, said Kevin Stafford of Neel-Schaffer Engineering, the firm contracted for the project.
