T.J. Maxx and PetSmart will be neighbors in Columbus this fall. Both are slated to open in the old Goody”s shopping strip, where Burlington Shoes and Old Navy still are located.
Construction is ongoing at the old Goody”s site, where PetSmart will locate, also utilizing some space being freed up by an Old Navy remodel. T.J. Maxx will neighbor the pet supplies and accessory store, to the south.
T.J. Maxx, which bills itself as a discount retailer of overstocked designer clothing and furniture, is scheduled to open in August. PetSmart will follow in October, said Ricky Powell, superintendent on the project.
Once complete, facing the shopping center, passersby will see, from left, Burlington Shoes, Old Navy, PetSmart then T.J. Maxx to the right. Office Depot also is in the strip, to the far right.
“They”re also doing a pretty elaborate renovation of the facade of the majority of the entire building,” said Kenny Wiegel, building official for the city of Columbus.
“We”re doing a lot of work to the base building,” said Reed Nelson of Copeland and Johns, a construction firm based in Jackson.
Copeland and Johns has specialized in retail business since 1978 and is tasked with “improving the exterior facade, replacing all the HVAC equipment and bringing those tenants in,” said Nelson, who expects the new additions will be a boon for the area.
“That center is a little dated, so this will be two great retail tenants and will bring a lot of attention to Leigh Mall and that center,” he continued.
“The (total) project is scheduled to be finished Oct. 15, but we”re hoping to beat that schedule,” said Powell.
