JACKSON – A bill outlawing toxic chemicals sold as bath salts, plant food and other products is headed to the Mississippi governor”s desk.
Authorties say people have been using the chemicals to get a psychotic high. They can cause hallucinations, paranoia and suicidal thoughts.
The Senate gave final approval Thursday to a bill that bans mephedrone and MDPV – short for methylenedioxypyrovalerone. The bill earlier passed the House.
Officials say the chemicals are sold in small packets in convenience stores under such names as Ivory Wave, Bliss, White Lightning and Hurricane Charlie.
Rep. Lester Carpenter of Burnsville filed the bill. He says use of the chemicals has become a growing problem in north Mississippi and other areas.
