Gameday Capsule: North Florida at MSU

NORTH FLORIDA (5-10) at MISSISSIPPI STATE (11-1) 

 

BROADCAST INFO: 4 p.m. on SEC Network+, plus Jim Ellis on the MSU Radio Network since Neil Price is in Jacksonville for the TaxSlayer Bowl. 

 

NORTH FLORIDA'S LAST 5: W 101-89 at Florida A&M, W 87-85 vs. FIU, L 85-51 at Missouri, L 79-65 at Ball State, L 104-52 at LSU. 

 

MSU's LAST 5: W 95-62 vs. North Georgia, L 65-50 at Cincinnati, W 92-61 vs. UT Martin, W 64-48 vs. Little Rock, W 70-64 vs. (neutral site) Southern Miss.  

 

NORTH FLORIDA's RESUMÉ: You can guarantee North Florida isn't going to be shocked by a team like MSU. North Florida may have lost 10 games, but five of them have come to teams better than MSU according to KenPom: Michigan State, Michigan, Florida, Miami and Missouri, all of those games on the road. The best win by far was against Eastern Michigan at home in overtime. 

 

NORHT FLORIDA PROJECTED STARTERS 

 

G 21 Ivan Gandia-Rosa, Soph., 6'1", 185 -- 14.8 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 4.7 apg, 40.8 3-point percentage, commits only 1.7 fouls per 40 minutes (93rd in the nation). 

 

G 2 JT Escobar, R-Soph., 6'2", 180 -- 10.7 ppg, 44.1 3-point percentage, hasn't hit double-digit points in any of his last four games. 

 

F 12 Ryan Burkhardt, Fr., 6'5", 193 -- 3.7 ppg, 42.1 3-point percentage, missed the first two games with a foot injury and has yet to play more than 20 minutes in a game. 

 

F 2 Wajid Aminu, Soph., 6'7", 195 -- 9.3 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 16 blocks and 12 steals in 15 games. 

 

F 0 Noah Horchler, Soph., 6'8", 190 -- 9.7 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 1.2 bpg, by far the team's best offensive rebounder with 40, his shot totals tend to go down against quality competition. 

 

MISSISSIPPI STATE PROJECTED STARTERS 

 

G 0 Nick Weatherspoon, Fr., 6'2", 195 -- 10.7 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 2.3 apg, 42.4 3-point percentage is best among MSU's guards. 

 

G 23 Tyson Carter, Soph., 6'4", 165 -- 11.3 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 2.1 apg, 3-point shooting woes continue as he's 2-14 in his last three games. 

 

G 11 Quinndary Weatherspoon, Jr., 6'4", 205 -- 13.9 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 4.5 apg, 75th in the nation in assist rate (which is pretty impressive for a leading scorer). 

 

F 35 Aric Holman, Jr., 6'10", 225 -- 12.3 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 16 blocks in 12 games, at least one block in six straight games. 

 

F 24 Abdul Ado, R-Fr., 6'11", 250 -- 6.5 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 2.36 bpg, 67.5 percent on 2-point attempts ranks 75th in the nation. 

 

NOTES: KenPom gives MSU a 95 percent chance of winning this game with a projected final score of 88-70...North Florida's JT Escobar in an Ole Miss transfer...North Florida loves to shoot 3's: 42.8 percent of its points come from 3-pointers, which ranks 11th in the nation...Nick Weatherspoon accounts for 10 of MSU's 13 charges taken.
