STARKVILLE -- After finishing 5-7, the Mississippi State football team is headed to a bowl game.
MSU will play Miami (Ohio) University 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 26 (ESPN), in the St. Petersburg Bowl at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, MSU announced Sunday afternoon. Cowbells will be allowed inside Tropicana Field.
It is a school record seventh-straight bowl game and 20th overall for the Bulldogs. MSU is 11-8 in bowl games, and 4-2 under MSU coach Dan Mullen. The seventh bowl appearance by Mullen is the most by an MSU coach. Jackie Sherrill led MSU to six bowl games from 1991-2003.
The Bulldogs were one of two 5-7 teams (North Texas) to get a bowl invite because there were not enough 6-win teams. Both were invited because of high Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. MSU has a score of 971.
MSU beat in-state rival Ole Miss 55-20 Nov. 26 in the Battle for the Golden Egg to finish 3-5 in the Southeastern Conference, good enough for sixth in the SEC Western Division.
Miami began the season 0-6, but won its final six games to get bowl eligible. The RedHawks went 6-2 in the Mid-American Conference.
It will be the first meeting between MSU and Miami.
