Columbus’ community-wide Christmas Tree Lighting Monday, Nov. 26 will welcome Santa, Miz Claus and Santa’s elves to a celebration from 5:30-7 p.m. at the east end of the Tombigbee Pedestrian Bridge in downtown Columbus. There, the city and Main Street Columbus will have one of the stately magnolia trees decorated for the season. It’s one of the best ways to kick off the holidays, said Barbara Bigelow, executive director of Main Street Columbus.
The tree lighting sponsored by Rex’s Rentals; Brislin Inc.; Southern Event Lighting; Colin Krieger, RE/MAX Partners, Starkville-Columbus; McAlister’s; and Coffee House on 5th will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a holiday program provided by students from fourth- and fifth-grades at Franklin Academy. The audience will be invited to sing along to traditional holiday tunes.
New this year will be a special story reading by Miz Claus and Janie Shields at 6:30 p.m. Columbus Mayor Robert Smith will “flip the switch” on the tree lights about 6:45 p.m. To the delight of kids, and adults as well, it will “snow” when the lights come on.
“We’ll have hot chocolate, cookies, take-home crafts for kids to make, reindeer food for your front yard on Christmas Eve, caroling and lots of fun,” Bigelow said. “Kids can write their letter to Santa and drop it in the mailbox headed to the North Pole. We hope everyone will bring their friends and family and enjoy this free, community event to welcome the holiday season.”
Be sure to bring a camera for pictures with Santa and Miz Claus.
“This beautiful evening will give all kids, both young and old, a wonderful, joyous time together — a night of family fun,” said Bigelow.
