The Columbus-Lowndes Public Library will host the exhibit “Grocery Stories: Stories Behind the Counter of MS Delta Chinese Grocery Stores” from Aug. 1-25.
Grocery stores played an integral role in the establishment of the Chinese presence in the Mississippi Delta. The exhibit focuses on the lives lived within grocery stores and demonstrates how many families blended their heritage with their new environment.
In addition, Sherman Hong will present “The Delta Chinese in 20th Century Mississippi” on Tuesday, Aug. 14 at noon. Hong was born in Greenville and has investigated why the Chinese came to Mississippi in the mid-19th century. He grew up during segregation and entered “white” public schools soon after it was permitted. Hong shares stories of his experiences in a deeply divided South in the late 1940s to the 1960s.
The exhibit is from the Mississippi Delta Chinese Heritage Museum at Delta State University. It was made possible through a grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council and through support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The presentation is sponsored by the Mississippi Humanities Council and the Friends of the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library.
The exhibit and presentation are free and open to the public.
