North Mississippi Medical Center-West Point has awarded $1,000 college scholarships to recent graduates Alvin Carter, III of West Point High School and Blake Wheeler of Oak Hill Academy.
Carter, the son of Alvin Jr. and Beverly Carter, plans to major in nursing at Mississippi University for Women and continue his education to become a family nurse practitioner. At West Point High School, he was Rotary Club Student of the Month in 2017 and 2018, and was selected by his classmates and faculty as Most Likely to Succeed all four years. He is a member of the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society and Health Occupations Students of America. He placed in the Top 5 in HOSA Leadership University and competed at the state level. He was the only student selected by his school to attend “Beyond Horizons: A Recognition of Scholarship and Achievement” by the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and he served as a page at the Mississippi State Capitol in Jackson. Carter is employed by The Green Leaf Flowers and Gifts and has volunteered many hours for community service projects.
Wheeler, the daughter of Scott and Terri Wheeler, lives in Aberdeen. She plans to major in biology at the University of Mississippi. At Oak Hill Academy, she was a varsity cheerleader, an All-American Cheerleader, Anchor Club sophomore director, class secretary, class treasurer, homecoming maid and Rotary Student of the Week. She was a member of the Drama Club, Student Government Association and Methodist Youth Foundation, played varsity tennis and served as film manager for the varsity basketball team and as Charity Gala representative. She also won the Art Award and was selected as Wittiest. Wheeler served as a camp counselor at Camp Mac in Munford, Ala., and has many hours of community service work.
