Mississippi University for Women’s music department will present “All Kinds of Jazz,” a concert featuring the MUW Jazz Ensemble, Tuesday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Connie Sills Kossen Auditorium in Poindexter Hall.
The event is free and open to the public.
Under the direction of Valentin M. Bogdan, assistant professor of music, the group will perform a mix of jazz standards, “hot club” jazz and Argentinean tangos.
The MUW Jazz Ensemble is a select group of student musicians. Some of their performing highlights include participation in the 2017 and 2018 Alcorn State Jazz Festival, performances at the Strand Theatre in Vicksburg, a performance at the 2017 Welty Gala and concerts throughout the state of Mississippi and the Columbus community. This year’s ensemble features an eclectic instrumentation, ranging from standard jazz instruments including electric guitar and saxophones, to more unconventional ones such as violin and accordion.
“We hope the MUW and Columbus communities will join us on Tuesday evening” said Bogdan, Jazz Ensemble director. “This is going to be a wonderful event. Our music and instrumentation are so diverse; I truly believe that our audiences will be able to find music they can relate to, that can speak to them. Whether it is a jazz standard they might have heard years ago, or a completely new arrangement of a tango tune, they will find something they are bound to love.”
