On the eve of Mississippi State University’s homecoming, a Citywide Tailgate on Friday, Oct. 20, will serve as a fundraiser for United Way of North Central Mississippi and celebration of the Bulldogs, Starkville community and tailgating tradition. Businesses, civic groups, churches, schools and others are urged to sign up now as tailgaters for the event sponsored by the Greater Starkville Development Partnership and Dynamic Fire Production.
The tailgate supporting 15 United Way of NCM agencies will be held in two areas this year, according to United Way representatives — downtown between City Hall and the fire station, and also near OCH Medical Center, Hospital Road and Lee Boulevard. Businesses do not have to be directly in the tailgate zones to participate; partnering with a business located in one of the two areas is encouraged.
“This gives local businesses an opportunity to mingle with their community neighbors and guests visiting from all parts to attend this year’s MSU homecoming,” said Elizabeth Graves of United Way, referring to the Bulldogs’ football game against the University of Kentucky Wildcats Oct. 21.
“Tailgating at its Finest” is the theme of Citywide Tailgate. Judging will take place from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., based on use of theme, best-tasting tailgate food and best presentation. Awards will include Best in Zone (five zones), Best New Tailgater and Best Citywide Tailgater. Ambassadors from the Greater Starkville Development Partnership will serve as judges.
“Come join us for the best lunch party ever downtown on Oct. 20,” said Graves. “Cheer on the Dawgs to beat the Wildcats and enjoy good food, good music and good fun.”
